Addressing Food Insecurity in Topeka’s Hi-Crest Neighborhood

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Topeka’s Hi-Crest neighborhood, where residents face limited access to nutritious food options. Recognizing this challenge, local organizations have initiated programs to enhance food availability and promote overall community health.

Understanding the Challenge

The Hi-Crest area has been identified as a food desert, with the nearest grocery stores located over a mile away. This lack of proximity, combined with limited transportation options, makes it difficult for residents to obtain fresh produce and other healthy foods. Additionally, the neighborhood has been labeled a transportation and childcare desert, further complicating residents’ ability to access essential services.

Community Initiatives

To address these issues, SENT, Inc., a local nonprofit organization, has launched several initiatives aimed at improving food security and wellness in Hi-Crest. One notable project is the Southside Filling Station, which provides residents with access to affordable, healthy food options. This initiative not only supplies nutritious food but also fosters a sense of community by serving as a gathering place for residents.

Another significant effort is the Monthly SE Topeka Market, which offers fresh food bundles at discounted prices, including produce and meat. The market also serves as a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and for community resources to connect with residents. Although the market is currently on hold, plans are in place to resume operations in the near future.

Progress and Future Plans

These initiatives have yielded positive results. According to the 2024 Health Map, the east side of Hi-Crest is now rated as a “healthy” neighborhood, while the west side remains “at risk.” This improvement underscores the impact of targeted community efforts in addressing food insecurity and promoting wellness.

Despite these advancements, challenges persist. Continued collaboration between local organizations, residents, and policymakers is essential to sustain progress and ensure that all members of the Hi-Crest community have access to the resources they need for a healthy lifestyle.
