In an increasingly interconnected world, global events have a profound impact on local communities, including Topeka. From international sporting events to global economic trends, these occurrences shape our city’s economic landscape and cultural fabric.
International Sporting Events Boost Local Economy
Major international sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, have a ripple effect on nearby regions. While Kansas City is set to host several World Cup matches, Topeka stands to benefit from the influx of visitors. The anticipated arrival of approximately 650,000 visitors to the region is expected to place strain on public safety, emergency, and transportation services. To prepare, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly declared a state of disaster emergency in three counties, including nearby Douglas County. This proactive measure aims to ensure that infrastructure and services are equipped to handle the increased demand. Source

Topeka has also been successful in hosting national competitions that draw thousands of visitors. Events such as the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, NAIA Cheer and Dance National Championships, and USA Wrestling of Kansas State Championships have collectively brought more than 15,000 people to the city. These events not only showcase Topeka’s capacity to host large-scale competitions but also contribute significantly to the local economy, with an estimated $3.2 million in spending. Source
