The Topeka City Council has approved the city’s 2026 operating budget, implementing several key amendments to address pressing community concerns.
Transit Funding Restored
In response to potential service reductions by Topeka Metro due to a $300,000 shortfall, the council allocated $250,000 to prevent cuts to bus routes, ensuring continued public transportation services for residents.
Investment in Affordable Housing
Recognizing the need for affordable housing, the council transferred $100,000 from economic development funds to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. This one-time allocation aims to support housing initiatives, with plans for a sustainable funding strategy in the future.
Additional Budget Adjustments
Other notable amendments include reallocating funds to restore the Chief Financial Officer position and adjusting parking regulations to support downtown businesses. The council emphasized that many of these decisions are interim solutions, with plans to develop long-term strategies in the coming months.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in upcoming discussions as the city continues to address these critical issues.
